taschuklevi The themes and concepts in this album are so consistent, which makes it all the more wonderful to listen to in its entirety, but if I had to pick, "The One I Need" is my favourite song for its vocal melody and the cello. Favorite track: The One I Need.

1.
TWILIGHT HILL Up on twilight hill A cold November chill Followed by the ghost The one I feared the most On cold star-studded night The galaxies were bright All horizons lead to you in the place where I stood... Like a kite cut from its string I remembered everything I was feeling so alone Up in the air with the lights below I am my mother's son Looking down upon the darkness of the land and the heart of a man... On my way back down I marked the frozen ground To prove I had been here On twilight hill, my dear What makes you fade away and leaves you on display? Smiling in my heart as I spiral in the dark...
2.
DAYS OF OUR KIND Would I startle at the sound of your body next to mine on the ground? You have some flowers, I have a cast... If your hand was lost in mine amongst the worries and the days of our kind I'll be at the window, you'll be driving past... If this world goes we may burn away for doing nothing wrong Our lives are strange enough to make this story last... The coming night will bring lots of unknown fears and alarming things So pull the wool over my eyes and we'll have a blast...
3.
EYES COATED IN FROST I'll disregard the history The many days all blistering The faintest sun, I feel the shine Upon the face that was never mine The time spent on wasted words They disappeared and became absurd or swallowed down and stored away for another storm that'll come our way... The empty shore of Sorroden and the ghostly steps we follow in The trails that lead through hollowness emerge into more forgetfulness Eyes coated in frost cannot see Eyes coated in frost cannot be I cannot be another stain upon your world, upon your name We've always gone our separate ways when the dark comes over the bay Eyes coated in frost cannot see Eyes coated in frost cannot be Eyes coated in frost never see Eyes coated in frost never be...
4.
Boy 03:52
BOY I love your sweet simplicity Smiling ocean wide for me A voice that drifts like warm summer breeze through the long and frigid arctic freeze... Lift me up from the deepest sea Sing me down from the highest tree Level me dead honestly All that matters is destined to be... They all pale right next to you Languishing in all they do I won't let them get near to you because you're all that I've got, it's true... Worry not, with fears we tread Hurry not, the years ahead Sorry not, the things we said For we're lost inside our heads... So it goes on and on On the last day of summer, you'll move to another Somewhere that keeps you protected and warm It goes on and on Through autumn and winter, the daylight gets dimmer and I'll always weather you just like a storm...
5.
SPECTRAL BIRDS These eyes, they tend to go around the curves of your body Down into your soul A journey through the snow The crying of the moon I wallowed in the sound So far from you The weight of a falling tomb I guess I'll learn The fever burns I guess I should have turned away these spectral birds that flew... The dizziness down here I feel the quaking at the roots The hollow cheer The sweetness of your tears The flowers round the lake I circle round until it's more than I can take I'm only half awake I guess I learned The fever burned I guess I should have turned away these spectral birds that flew...
6.
THROUGH YOUR HAIR We're handcuffed to the rails of a one-way speeding train that will surely crash and burn before I hear the words... Calculations have been wrong Contemplations have begun The sadness and the scare The wind blowing through your hair With you and no one else I no longer feel myself Been stripped of my armour in this most troublesome hour Calculations have been wrong Contemplations have begun The sadness and the scare The wind blowing through your hair Infatuations have been wrong Disintegration has begun You are everywhere The wind blowing through your hair
7.
THE ONE I NEED I wonder if I'll ever work it out There's a lifetime left to live without You're the only one I think about Are you the one I need? Days they end before they have begun We have played the games without the fun This is the season without the sun Are you the one I need? Felt the shadows dancing in my head My heart like a bursting fruit You are with me in the dead of night pulling at the roots... There is nothing left to talk about Spiders crawling up the water spout But I need to know without a doubt Are you the one I need?
8.
Dream Life 04:31
DREAM LIFE I want to be something right A perfect sparrow in flight I want to be something true The deepest ocean of blue I want to be recognized only for a moment I want to lay out in the sun without a single worry I want to be your special child Forgive me with a smile I want to be your heart and soul We'll never ever grow old... So cover me with all your trees and all your fields below me Wash over me with all your seas I'll be here, honestly... I want to be everything Chameleon, a changeling I want to live an honest life An animal in the night I hope to see this to the end and never be forgotten And when I have you in my dreams I'll never be a burden...

about

Dedicated to the memory of Hank.

These songs make no empty promises, they alternately whisper and ring out in the vastness with the force of authentic yearning. At once spacious and intimate, this is music that finds me when I am lost… wistful, dreamy, haunting, melancholic, introspective and not sure quite how to say it - elemental? The songs have weather and ocean, they also have roots in the ground - geologic geographic ancestral emotional terrain all being reckoned with... clear and heartfelt articulations from within the fog of doubt, resonant with tenderness, soulful, humane, beautiful... Ali Murray’s voice knows loss, and is all the more comforting for it.

''Anyone who's already familiar with Murray's immense body of work should be well-acquainted with his signature amalgamation of sorrowful alt-folk, ethereal ambient dreamscapes and existentialist pop. It seems like he's on a constant pursuit to unveil the sad truths of this world.
'Spectral Birds' is a lonely grey dream, a melancholy journey into the unknown, and a wonderful winter treat of an album'' - Fog Songs

''Deeply conceived and painstakingly thought-out...it's the perfect Winter album – desolate and haunted but also comforting and mysterious.'' - Heresiarch Reviews
